Sept 06: Alex Aerheault
I am an artist in residence this year
at Maine College of Art in the Print Dept., a wonderful way
to be both student and faculty and artist etc.
I have a space among the population and teach one class.......
which is
really anything I want it to be and focuses on process, methods,
materials
and ways of making...... ....reading included. It was a rollercoaster
to get
to this place, but in the end the support of faculty and colleagues
and
students is what buoyed me along and has brought some of the
most joyous
days since grad school. I am grateful.
I miss being in touch. And....... looking
at some old writing from Vermont I
realize how essential this program is, how it can bring out
the best in us
as makers and intellects and human beings........
I also want to inform you, that I have resigned as a board member
from the
Vermont College Alumni Association, as I have artistic and pedagogical
commitments requiring more of my time then when I began. Fell
free to
contact me if you have any questions about this.
Sept 06 Post to the yahoo group regarding
Michael Minelli
Michael "not
a dog" Minelli
made cowtown last week. His latest work is part of the "Shiny" show
just opened at the Wexner Center for the Arts. I was a bit
disappointed not to find him rolling around on the floor scratching
his back (wanting his belly rubbed) during the pre opening
panel discussion. His presentation made up for it with some
very revealing insights into his working and conceptual process.
Baudrillard intimates that all knowledge is representation.
Levi Strauss considers representation as language and Michael
(re) presented his talk with a barrage of images. Helen Molesworth
included Minelli's new work in good company- Warhol's Silver
Clouds through Koons' Balloon Dog. The implications of the
shiny surface, its attractiveness, its narcissism and the various
implications… Ya
Da Ya Da Ya Da. Along with Koons, and Michael, Rachel Harrison
featured a video of a dog chewing on a bone to seductive rock
music
(Ringo) and a piece involving two dalmations. With all the
waxing eloquent on reflective surfaces and their attraction,
no one pointed out the attractiveness of the shiny eyes and
sleek, "shiny"
complexions of creatures who accompany us but are not human.
In a
sense they attract and reflect us but more as a subjective "other" than
as a shiny (objective) physical material. In this sense Michael's
new work was the more intriguing and interesting. Along with
Rachel, he seems to be entering in on a different aspect of
the Shiny discourse. It was great visiting with him. Paradise
is the heart of the dog pound,
Stanley
