Mary Seymour grew up in Zimbabwe. After training as a high school art teacher, she left Africa to pursue further art education in Canada. Seymour obtained a BFA (Hons.) from the University of Windsor (1979), a B.Ed from York University, Ontario (1993) and a MFA from Vermont College of Norwich University, U.S.A. (1999) A member of both the Ontario Society of Artists and the Society of Canadian Artists, she has received several awards. These include the Lifetime Member's Award, O.S.A.(1998) and Best Painting Award, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (1998).
As an oil painter interested in representing
everyday life, Seymour is inspired not only by her past life
in Africa, but also by aspects of city and rural life in and
around Toronto. "As an immigrant I am keenly aware of the vast
population of displaced people in our world today. I have a
particular interest in the meanings of home and homelessness,
the world of the exile and the émigré."
Seymour's work has appeared in several publications
including the text "Looking Out Looking In "Third
edition, Ronald B. Adler et al. 2006; a poster "Women’s
Vision, Voices, Vote", for International Women’s Day 2004,
(Canadian Labour Congress) and a US/French AirlineParts Manufacturer’s
calendar in which one of her paintings was chosen to represent
Canada as one of 12 customer countries, 2002.
