YVETTE DEDE- Feb '05

The installation took place at The South Carolina Botanical Gardens during a month long artist residency program. Two artists were asked to create an outdoor installation using natural materials. (This has been an on going program for the past 16 years.) For the month of February 2007, Japanese artist Hiroko Inoue, and myself, Yvette Dede, worked together and with the garden horticulturalists to create a bamboo structure with an interior space. The concept was the integration of cultures--a east meets west, basically. The structure is composed of bamboo, rammed earth, flat stones and two rocks which represent the artist/ culture's respective space in the interior of the structure. There is a bridge that provides access to the piece that stretches over the swales which is the long grass that surrounds the sculpture. (Very wet, bog-like) Part of the design consisted of having to incorporate swales that serve to filter the chemicals from the water that the nursery generates. It was an exciting collaboration between two artists working with the horticulturalists, scientists, and Clemson students.
